Front Garden with Parking, Marston

A front garden in Marston, Oxford. Space had already been made for parking one car - using coarse, deep gravel with no sub-base. Another parking space was needed but the client also wanted plants and an attractive outlook.

My new design shortened the front wall - replacing concrete blocks with local stone and giving easier access for the cars. The brick-paved circles now provide a firm base for the two vehicles, with added visual interest when the cars are elsewhere. The three wrought-iron arches, with their climbing rose, star jasmine and clematis, screen the vehicles from the front room. A membrane and gravel mulch suppresses weeds in the planting areas, while allowing drainage of rainwater. Painting the front door white helps it to recede into the general background.

With the current trend for paving over front gardens for parking, I believe strongly that there are softer options which allow water drainage, and also the opportunity to be outside meeting neighbours, whilst keeping the garden in trim.
